Okay, my screenplay isn’t good. I’ll be the first person to tell you that. It’s sloppy, the plot is more scrambled than a plate of scrambled eggs, and my main character is a jerk. He never arcs. He just stays a jerk.
Obvious problems aside, I think I have a rather interesting hook, and I’d love to get some good notes on my script. But everytime I ask someone to read it, one of two things happens. First, someone says, I’d love to read it! And then they never do. Or, someone says, I’d love to read it! They read it. And then they say something like, I think you should make your main character a woman.
I don’t want my main character to be a woman. I don’t my movie to take place in outer space. I don’t want flying horses, I don’t want a cheesy love triangle between the protagonist, antagonist, and the football coach. It’s just not what I’m going for. And I’m tired of wasting my time listening to people who obviously don’t get what I’ve written.
So I’m thinking about getting professional script analysis. At least when someone’s paid to read my screenplay, they’re pretty much obligated to do it. And hopefully a trained screenplay consultant will be able to assess my script as it’s written and maybe comment intelligently on its merits and flaws. I know there are flaws. But I want to know how to fix the plot and the hero, not how to transform them into space monsters who ride pegasuses.
I haven’t chosen a script reading service yet, I’m stlil shopping around. Some of them are insanely high priced, and I definitely have a budget. So I’m working on it. I’m not even sure this screenplay is worth saving, but I’d like to at least get an informed opinion.
